Iceland- Day 4
Saturday July 14th
I’m behind on my blogging and getting all my days mixed up- today I woke up and drove to Húsavík. I really liked that town. It’s a small fishing village on the northern coast of Iceland.I was supposed to take a whale watching/puffin tour but it was cancelled because of weather :/ I rescheduled one in another city with the same company tomorrow.
Since my tour was cancelled I had time to back track and see Europe’s most powerful waterfall Dettifoss. It did look pretty powerful... but I’m no expert on power. Yet. I’m merely an apprentice.

After the waterfall I headed down to Hverir which looked like a barren boiling landscape of hell- which was really cool. It’s just colorful mud springs and sulfur so it smells.
After that I drove around Lake Myvatn and stopped to take pictures and eat mushroom soup at the nature baths.
I then drove to Godafoss, which legend has it, is the waterfall where the Vikings discarded their pagan statues when they decided to convert to Christianity. I got that straight from the sign posted at the falls- so it must be true :)
I am currently sitting in the mess hall at a camping site just outside of Akureyri. The city is the 2nd largest in Iceland and I’ll admit.. I was surprised at how big it is.
Iceland is full of tiny towns so it’s weird to come across a city.
I’ve decided Iceland is like a cold version of Hawaii- very green, black volcanic rock and volcanoes everywhere. There aren’t as many trees as I would’ve thought. The only animals I’ve seen are sheep and horses. I haven’t seen any rodents on my many hikes. Also there are hardly any bugs! (One of my American friends told me there are no mosquitoes in Iceland!)
Also it’s foggy and rains all the time. The sun came out today and I didn’t realize how much I missed it :)
Well- until tomorrow!
