Iceland- Day 5
Sunday- July 15th
It’s blawg time. I don’t know if that’ll ever get old. My humor is not very sophisticated. Speaking of sophisticated... just kidding I can’t find anything to tie that to. Nothing I did today was particularly sophisticated 😂
Today. I explored Akureyri a little, then drove to Dalvik (it’s a town not a name of a person- but I can see where you would get confused ;) THEN I drove to Hjalteyri- which is actually between the previously named towns. I did a lot of town-exploring. Hjalteyri is the place where I had my whale watching tour. I was astonished at how small the town is. I’m pretty sure there is only a town there because of the whale watching tour.
The tour was cool. Quite cool 💨
The sun was out for a bit though. We saw like 4-5 whales. Humpback whales. Who are only in Iceland (technically they’re in the water around Iceland) for the summer. They come up to feed on krill and then they go to warmer waters like the Caribbean to mate.
I also learned that humpbacks are pretty solitary- they might travel with others for a couple of hours or a day- but other than that they go at it alone. I smiled when I realized it was a metaphor for my life. #anythingcanbeametaphorifyoutryhardenough
Mother humpbacks break this rule when they’re showing their calves how to get back to their feeding grounds. But by the time they arrive they split and go their separate ways #journeysong
I’m sure you wanted to know all these facts about whales 🐳
The tour normally takes 2 hours but we were out there for 4 hours because they didn’t want to come back without a whale sighting. They have a perfect record for at least the past two years.

After the tour I drove back to Akureyri - so I didn’t really make any progress along the ring road. Another thing that made me happy- almost everyone else on the boat tour was French. I could kinda understand conversations and I didn’t let on. Like a spy.
