the first day
Hey guys I’m back. Back in New York that is. And every time I say ‘New York’ a little voice in my head follows it up with “Concrete jungle where dreams are maade of, there’s nothing you caan’t dooo” 🎤🎶
So yesterday I feel like the three of us went through the stages of grief when it came to our exhaustion levels. Let me unfold for you a tale. First of all- I came to New York with my two friends Haley and Maren. You’ll hear more about them later...
Those of you who know me- know I’m kind of (autocorrect tried to correct that to ‘kind enough” ha! No.) I’m kind of cheap. Like I was kicking myself for my 52 hours of travel home from Thailand. But I always pick the cheaper flights- even if the times or hours spent traveling are inconvenient. Maybe one day I'll learn.
our flight left at 10pm on Monday. And we arrived at 9 am on Tuesday.

Besides the few minutes of sleep 😴 We got on the plane- we didn’t sleep again until Tuesday night. So you can imagine the weirdness that went on.
The sunrise on the plane was awesome- the sun was bright red and I was freaking out a little- looking back it might have been the start of my sleep-deprivation symptoms ;)
I tried to take pictures and a video- but you know how phone cameras can never do nature justice.... right? So I just took a pic of the warm glow of the red sun on our faces

I do this weird thing with my hand in photos- I curl it in like a scared woodland creature
ANYWAY- all about New York:
We arrived at our hotel around 10:30 am and then went to eat. We are at this cool pizza place- but the best thing about it might have been that it was warm! It rained all day yesterday and warm buildings were greatly appreciated. But also the pizza was delicious!! Like I could’ve drunk the sauce. We ordered a margherita to share and I tried to impress my friends with the tale of Naples and how the margherita pizza got its name. There we’re justifiably more impressed with the pizza itself :

when I look at that picture I don’t see people- I see pizza. And then I notice the people.... the deliriously tired people in the picture whose faces make me smile with delight.
After we had pizza we went to Times Square to see if we could get standby tickets to a show- we ended up walking around a lot- Times Square was actually kind of magical in the rain. I really liked it :)
also don’t mind my weird outfit- I realize it looks weird. Before you judge me remember I was slightly sleep deprived and a little cold 🌂
After walking around Times Square we decided to stop at our hotel and stare at the wall- jk we talked to each other :) but it was hard to motivate ourselves to do anything else. We didn't nap or anything. I don't know how we did it. Instead of sleeping we went out. We went out and fulfilled a dream I’ve had for a long while...
I keep trying to dramatically set up stories :)
Think back to where you were in 2006. What were you doing? What was your hair like? I’ll tell you what I was doing in 2006... not going to the Guggenheim
I blame my sister- who has been a real pal most of my life- but on that fateful day in June (? Not sure which month it was..) in 2006 I called her ‘thorn in my side’. Perhaps too rashly. Sorry Ashley :)
it’s a a story I like to tell when people think me and my sister get along too well. And it’s not that long of a story. Despite the build-up. Ashley and I were in New York with our parents back in 2006. One day we were deciding what we should do. Ashley wanted to go souvenir shopping and I wanted to go to the Guggenheim because I’m a big fan of Frank Lloyd. Wright. (My great grandpa was named Frank Lloyd too so that’s cool) Aaaaand we went souvenir shopping. So my chances of viewing unique modern art and magnificent architecture had to wait 12 years.
Side note 📝 I didn’t really hate her for making us shop. I let go of it years ago. Like 2. Na more like 12- I just like to tell the story to make sure people understand the hurdles that our relationship (my sister’s and I) have had to cross

the mental image that gave me when she said ‘I hope your soul is finally at rest’ looked something like this:
And I realize that was an extremely drawn out way to say “we went to the Guggenheim”. Now you know the reason why I journal AND blog.
So I’ll post some pics of the Guggenheim but when you see the deadness in my eyes remember it’s from lack of sleep and not from uninterest or literal deadness (you remember I’m dramatic right?)

my favorite thing was probably the chandelier from the Paris Peace Accords:
After the Guggenheim we went to Carlo’s Bakery (Food Network anyone?)
Then the Shake Shack. To give you an idea of the way my tired mind works- yesterday when I was typing ‘Shake Shack’ in my phone for directions- I was convinced I had spelled ‘Shake’ wrong and that the two different kinds of shakes are spelled differently 🥛👋
Spelling is the first of my mental abilities to go when I’m tired :)

We ended the day around 8pm New York time (6pm Utah time) and got some much needed sleep!
Day 1 in New York was awesome! Despite my tired-comments :) We had a lot of fun. Good/goofy conversations. At the Guggenheim Haley was trying to teach me how to make up fake stories about art exhibits and I kept taking my stories too far... though I thought they were just-the-right-amount of exaggeration :)
Today should be amazing as well with slightly warmer weather! TTFN
