Iceland- Day 7
Tuesday July 17th
I gotta start from the end of the day today because I feel like I’m roughing it for real right now. 50 minutes outside of Reykjavik is this free campsite- which is unusual for Iceland. I would’ve thought it would be packed with people? Ha maybe I’m the only cheapskate tourist ;)
So it’s like in the middle of nowhere there are a couple of houses and run-down buildings and then there is this huge empty space for campers. There are probably like 5 other people here. And you know how much I love abandoned things!
It feels a little hippie-esque but I’m liking that because I’ve been spending the last week in a van.

Pictures of the morning:
This morning I slept in a little and then headed to Snæfellsjökull, the volcano I mentioned. There’s a glacier on top. In my head I call it ‘sunuffluffagus’ which I’m sure is close to the real pronunciation.
Snæfellsjökull was beautiful- and sparsely populated. It was sunny and dare I say WARM this morning! It’s been low 50’s most of the time I’ve been here- but today was high 50’s.

I then headed down south towards Reykjavik, thus completing my circumfrancial journey around Iceland. I stopped at the famous Hallgrimskirkja Church ⛪ in Reykjavik- it was very plain- the inside was all white with no stained glass windows, which is unlike other churches I’ve seen in Europe. They had the option of going up to the tower to overlook the city- which I did and it was cool. Reykjavik seems more colorful and diverse than the small towns I’ve seen. But it looks less like traditional Iceland to me. I did see a lot of bearded men and I couldn’t help thinking it kind of pays homage to the Viking.
I haven’t really mentioned the looks I’ve been getting- but people are surprised when they see me by myself driving a camper van. Like a- ‘where’s your man?’ -type look. Also when I pay for only 1 person at campsites I get some befuddled glances.
That’s right kids, I’ve learned to take care of myself AND drive #dontstopmenow
I suppose that’s really all I’ve done today. We did get stuck up in the tower at the church for like half an hour. The elevator wasn’t working to head back down and the door to the stairs was locked. So someone used the emergency phone and a lady had to climb 8 floors of a winding narrow staircase to come open the door for us #blessher. I took a picture of the stairs so you can visualize my life. Particularly me walking down some stairs. Which, now that I mention it, doesn’t seem all that important.
